Vibo Valentia Marina – Calabria Seiling Part III
Just a few kilometres away, at the foot of the northwestern side of Mount Poro, lies the ancient town of Hipponion, which later became Monteleone di Calabria, and today ViboValentia.
This is the capital city of the province as well as a commercial core and point of reference for no fewer than 200,000 inhabitants from the remote surrounding areas.
On Saturdays the town is enlivened by a never-to-be-forgotten and brightly colourful marketplace, where farmers wearing traditional costumes display the humble produce of their land in «tafarejie» (wicker baskets). At the northern end of the town, stands a Norman-Swabian castle, housing one of the most important archaeological museums of Calabria. The museum keeps one of the five golden plates still existing, a precious evidence of Orphean rituals. If one wishes to reach the museum on foot, it is necessary to go through most of the old town centre, rich in eighteenth-century palaces, some of which stand out for their valuable architectural design.
By car, going through Mesima or Angitola valleys, one can reach Serra San Bruno, a town swallowed up by a wood of firs, chestnuts, holm-oaks and beeches, where one of the rare charterhouses still active and working in Europe is located. This charterhouse, built in 1,100, has passed on to the local population the skills for processing mushrooms and make typical cakes such as «’nzulli» that together with «mostaccioli», traditionally made in the neighbouring town of Soriano, are evidence of how tightly present is linked to past.
Once one has reached this place, it is absolutely worth spending the evening comfortably seated on the veranda of «Go», a small restaurant overlooking the gulf, located just behind Pizzo Calabro and the motorway junction of Sant’Onofrio, famous not only for its gastronomic specialities, mostly fish delicacies, but for the cheerful family that runs it and every single evening offers a music performance singing a repertoire of ethnical songs.

The seafront of Vibo Marina is a place where one can have a pleasant walk when looking for typical Calabrian restaurants (one can have meals at prices within the reach of everybody, from rock-bottom to exorbitant) or when willing to buy some pieces of hand-made clay objects and wickerwork.

On the other hand, inside the very town, there are shops specialising in nautical products and instruments and fishing equipment. In the evening, just next to the Fiume Dock, the fish auction, with all its ageless rituals, takes place; it is a rendezvous not to be missed, along with the feast of Madonna di Pompei, falling on the week after mid-august holidays.
The old port dating back to imperial times, was constructed byAgatocle.and was to be located between the headland of San Nicola – where a villa was discovered and proven to date back to Roman times, and where the port tower was later erected -, the built-up area of Porto Salvo and the Bivona castle, standing quite close to the sea shore, as a protection for the port.

Vibo Valentia Marina
Up to a few years ago, when sailing from Salerno to GioiaTauro, the safest port was Vibo Marina’s, just a few miles away from Pizzo Calabro. It now has approximately 440 berths.
It is mainly a mercantile port; it is used by oil tankers, coming from Sicily to replenish fuel containers, and cargo boats carrying other goods, such as wood.
This is also the point where boats going to Aeolian Islands depart from. Here the headquarters of the Harbour-office, the coastguard and the look-outs of Customs police are located. The port has two wharves, Marina Carmelo and Marina Stella del Sud – equipped with gas and water supply facilities – as well as docks Fiume and Malta, where boats can be refuelled with petrol and diesel fuel.
