Vibo Valentia Marina – Calabria Seiling Part III

Charter

Just a few kilometres away, at the foot of the northwestern side of Mount Poro, lies the ancient town of Hipponion, which later became Monteleone di Calabria, and today ViboValentia.
This is the capital city of the province as well as a commercial core and point of reference for no fewer than 200,000 inhabitants from the remote surrounding areas.

On Saturdays the town is enlivened by a never-to-be-forgotten and brightly colourful marketplace, where farmers wearing traditional costumes display the humble produce of their land in «tafarejie» (wicker baskets). At the northern end of the town, stands a Norman-Swabian castle, housing one of the most important archaeological museums of Calabria. The museum keeps one of the five golden plates still existing, a precious evidence of Orphean rituals. If one wishes to reach the museum on foot, it is necessary to go through most of the old town centre, rich in eighteenth-century palaces, some of which stand out for their valuable architectural design.
By car, going through Mesima or Angitola valleys, one can reach Serra San Bruno, a town swallowed up by a wood of firs, chestnuts, holm-oaks and beeches, where one of the rare charterhouses still active and working in Europe is located. This charterhouse, built in 1,100, has passed on to the local population the skills for processing mushrooms and make typical cakes such as «’nzulli» that together with «mostaccioli», traditionally made in the neighbouring town of Soriano, are evidence of how tightly present is linked to past.
Once one has reached this place, it is absolutely worth spending the evening comfortably seated on the veranda of «Go», a small restaurant overlooking the gulf, located just behind Pizzo Calabro and the motorway junction of Sant’Onofrio, famous not only for its gastronomic specialities, mostly fish delicacies, but for the cheerful family that runs it and every single evening offers a music performance singing a repertoire of ethnical songs.

Vibo Valentia Marina

Vibo Valentia Marina

Up to a few years ago, when sailing from Salerno to GioiaTauro, the safest port was Vibo Marina’s, just a few miles away from Pizzo Calabro. It now has approximately 440 berths.
It is mainly a mercantile port; it is used by oil tankers, coming from Sicily to replenish fuel containers, and cargo boats carrying other goods, such as wood.

This is also the point where boats going to Aeolian Islands depart from. Here the headquarters of the Harbour-office, the coastguard and the look-outs of Customs police are located. The port has two wharves, Marina Carmelo and Marina Stella del Sud – equipped with gas and water supply facilities – as well as docks Fiume and Malta, where boats can be refuelled with petrol and diesel fuel.

Sailing Vacations Mediterranean – Italy

Sailing Vacations Mediterranean – Italy

A Sardinia sailing vacation unfolds in a wonderful part of the Mediterranean. When you go sailing in Calabria waters, you enter a natural world of incredible natural beauty. Now we will continue our

sailing vacations in Calabria (Italy) in wilage Gizzeria.. We are now at the mouth of river Savuto, anciently known as river Okinaros; in the surroundings, the town’s of Terina and, more to the south, of Temesa (Temso) were located. According to poet Licofrone’s accounts, the Greek warriors who had survived the war of Troy went ashore just there… and other people, sailing from Troy to the flowing waters of Memblete, the Pelasgian river, round the Cerneate isle, will settle on the land that surrounds the mouth of river Lameto … across the Straits leading to the Tyrrhenian sea…». At a stone’s throw from there, we discover the marina of Nocera Torinese, where traditional cuisine has reached excellent quality levels, with skilful combinations of farm produce and sea food, the results of which are sometimes quite unusual but, judging by their delicious taste, absolutely successful. The Sinus Lametinus or Hipponate, now called the gulf of Sant Eufemia, embraces the villages located between Cape Suvero and Tropea. Off the coast, one can even spot Stromboli volcano and Aeolian Islands. Just past Cape Suvero and its lighthouse, we reach the roadstead of Gizzeria, where local fishermen usually moor their small boats during good weather. The sur¬rounding area is rich in typical trattorias and restaurants where fish dishes are a specialty.

The view offered by the Lamezia plain is almost boundless. During clear spring and September days, one can see mount Tiriolo, on one side, and the Aeolian Archipelago, on the other side. Beyond the airport, among the remains of modern industrial buildings (the headquarters of SIR chemical/oil-refining plant had to be located just here, as evidenced by the pier still standing), there are wide orchards and fields where citrus fruits and vegetables are grown. Between the two rivers Amato (Lametos) and Angitola (Torino), a great number of tourist facilities provide good opportunities to stop and buy food supplies or even have a quick meal in one of the trattorias hidden among mag¬nificent eucalyptus trees. A Sardinia sailing vacation on Italy’s Tyrrhenian Sea is a cruise through a incredible beauty. More informations about sailing vacations you can find on our web page.

Sailing In Italy – Pizzo Calabro

Sailing In Italy – Pizzo Calabro

Sailing in Sardinia

Soft and warm summer winds from the north and northwest average between 7 and 14 knots, though they. In late afternoon, more southerly and stronger winds can be expected. Spring and fall sailing vacations is also quite pleasant.

Just past the strip of tuffaceous coastline, run along by an old rail track, we notice the entrance of a cavern excavated by worshippers’ hands and containing a host of votive little statues made by fishermen and local craftsmen: it is the little church of Piedigrotta. In the nearby area, a great number of slipways for boats are clear evidence of busy seafaring and fishing activity. This was the point from where boats used to set sail immediately as soon as look-outs on towers sighted tuna shoals.
We now arrive very close to Baia della Seggiola (literally «bay of the chair») – which is a Winter shelter for fishermen’s boats – and Pizzafundi pier of Pizzo Calabro: the promenade offers the possibility to try typical traditional foods and drinks at every single corner.
Pizzo Calabro, a general view from the castle

Pizzo Calabro Italy Sailing vacations

Straightaway we take this opportunity to buy the famous Pizzo truffle – a renowned ice-cream sold in any cafe bar in this town – and store it in our on-board ice-box. In trattorias and restaurants, one can try pepata di cozze (dish made with stewed mussels), «pitta lorda» and a kind of appetizer made with octopus, all accompanied by a glass of a first quality local zibibbo (muscatel) wine.
The old port of Pizzo Calabro was located further southward. Until 1860 it was the one and only point to depart from and reach all the other coast villages, such as Tropea, and big ports of the Tyrrhenian coast:

Naples, Genoa and Palermo. This is the place where, soon after the defeat of Napoleon’s Empire, Joachim Murat, King of the Two Sicilies, went ashore to carry out his anti-Bourbon plot but tragically died before being able to do it.
We decide to treat ourselves to a two-hour stop. We take the lift (still not completely built) leading us up to the Aragonese castle and the beautiful Repubblica Square all covered with sunshade parasols sheltering tourists – busy at tasting any kind of food and ricotta-cheese ice-creams – from sunlight.

Sailing to Diamante in Calabria – Italy

Sailing to Diamante in Calabria – Italy

The next stop on our sailing vacation is Diamante. The port houses about two hundred boatsThe academy of the read hot chili papper - Sailing vacations Calabria - Italy

and offers services typical of a small seaside village which become quite livery and overcrowded with tourists especially during Summer.

The village can easily be reached through via Santa Lucia, a street that gets right into its old part, swarming with craftsman’s workshops and typical trattorias.  Also the Accademia del peperonico (Academy of the red hot chili papper) is located here; it has by now become a kind of regional gastronomic agency, selling not only ordinary home-made products and farm produce, but also small jars filled with preserves and red papper purees. on the outskirts of Diamante, at Buonvicino, the restaurant “La rondinella” offers the possibility to try traditional cuisine dished such as “I’arranciatura” and “ucuonzu” made with vegetables, pluses and sausages. This will variegate our sailing vacations in Calabria.

Typical of the neighboring small village of Santa Maria del Cedro are the so-called «pannicelli», pastry cakes made with citron and currants, which became famous when praised by Italian writer Gabriele d’Annunzio.
Now we continue our sailing vacations. From Diamante we set sail towards Belvedere Cirella isle- Sailing Vacations Calabria - Italy

Marittimo, always keeping far from the coast. A long series of ancient villages are to be found all scattered on mountain tops. On our left-hand side, we can catch a glimpse of the headland of Cozzo Pellegrino. Some centuries ago, the first Provencal Vadois farmers, and later Scanderbeg Albanians, settled down in this area. On our right-hand side, the Montea mountain range stands out clearly. Since ancient times, mariners used to scan the cloudy horizon standing out around the Montea peaks to guess what the weather would be like in the days to come. If this is your first sailing vacation, please read careful the sailing guide to avoid sailing accident.

Sailing Along The Coast Of Calabria in 2011 – Scalea part II

Sailing Along The Coast Of Calabria in 2011 – Scalea part II

We continue with our Scalea sailing vacations adventure from the post before. Ulysse is said to have stopped in this part of the region to erect a heroon (temple) dedicated to beloved friends Dracone who died during the journey.Photoshoot in Calabria: Riviera dei Cedri : Calabria from Scratch -Scalea Beach

The temple is splendid construction and the bright and vivid colour nuances of the blue sea and
green mountains invite us to moor our boat in the surroundings of this small isle and go a scouting tour of the grotte del Leone (Lion’s caverns), Sardine (Pilchard’s cavern) and the grotta Azzura (Blue cavern).

Just before sunset, beyond the baia del Carpino (Carpino bay) and Scalea – a free fall of small houses sloping gently down to sea level creating some sort of flight of steps -, beyond the mouth of the mythical Lao river and Cirella isle,

we dock at Diamante, by going around the headland which blocks the view of Panoramio - Photo of Spiaggia San Nicola Arcellathe pier.

The Laos Potamos of the ancient inhabitants of Magna Graecia is Surrounded  by woods of oleanders and tamarinds. In times gone by , it was a line of communication with the Pollino mountains tops and grotte deglieremiti (Hermits’ caverns). The very mouth of the river was used as a berth by merchant ships transporting goods to and from Aeolian islands and Sicily; more islands there must have been some sort of canal linking the area with the colony of  lao, located near Santa Maria del Cedro.

We easily sail past the shallow waters, keeping at safe distance as suggested by the local sea authorities, that together with the yacht marine, provided us with information of overriding importance on the phone.

Our sailing boat stops next to Dino isle, which was known in ancient times as Isola dei Conigli (Rabbits Isle) just in front of the tower of San NicolaArcella. We have gathered information regarding  the history and legends of Magna Graecia (ancient Greek settlements in southern Italy). As far back as ten thousand years ago, some primitive men living in the Valle del Lao natural reserve, left inside the Romito caverns, some valuable graffito designs depicting the primitive ox.
